Pistol Makarov (PM) and its History

The Makarov pistol, also known as PM (Pistolet Makarova), was developed by Soviet designer Nikolay Fyodorovich Makarov in the late 1940s. It was designed as a replacement for the older Tokarev TT-33 and Nagant M1895 pistols, which were previously used by the Soviet armed forces.
Development of the Makarov pistol began in 1947 and it was adopted into the Soviet army in 1951. The Makarov pistol was designed with an emphasis on simplicity, reliability, and easy maintenance. It uses 9×18mm Makarov cartridges, which were specifically developed for this model.
